Intent
At Ovingham CE First School, we provide a maths curriculum that is challenging and engaging where we have high expectations of the pupils we teach. We encourage children to be confident in maths and approach each lesson with a ‘can do’ attitude. We believe that it is important that the children we teach are resilient, that they learn from their mistakes and can explain their reasoning. It is important to solve problems effectively and efficiently, using systematic approaches. Our children are encouraged to work collaboratively to discuss their thinking and reasoning.
Spirituality in Maths
Spirituality can be discovered through mathematics as our children engage in logical reasoning, problem-solving, and the exploration of abstract concepts. While mathematics is traditionally viewed as a subject grounded in logic and precision, its practice can also contribute to the development of spiritual qualities. The process of tackling mathematical challenges encourages resilience, patience, and a growth mindset, all of which are valuable aspects of spiritual development. Through the collaborative exploration of mathematical concepts, mathematics education extends beyond its practical applications to provide a platform for nurturing spiritual qualities.
Implementation
At our schools, we teach the National Curriculum for mathematics, using the National Primary Guidance and the NCETM Curriculum Prioritisation and Professional Development Materials to support our planning, resourcing and delivery and to also develop teacher subject knowledge. We deliver the core NC aims of fluency, reasoning and problem solving in every lesson.
Questioning Is a key part of our maths curriculum and pupils are asked to explain their thinking and reasoning in order to develop their mathematical thinking skills and vocabulary. Teachers model the language used providing stem sentences for the children to explain their understanding of concepts.
Impact
Our maths curriculum is progressive, carefully structured to build knowledge and skills year by year. Through engaging lessons and high-quality teaching, pupils develop fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving abilities that extend beyond the classroom. Regular assessment plays a vital role in identifying gaps, informing teaching, and ensuring every learner is supported to reach their full potential.
